Manage general settings
Use General Settings to turn customer features on or off across your mobile app and storefront, like menu search, favorites, the coupon code field, reorder, item notes, and the buttons customers see on their open orders.
Who is this article for?
- Gegsy merchants who want to turn shared customer-facing options on or off across their mobile app and storefront.
- Owners and employees who have been granted the General Settings permission.
About general settings
General Settings holds the switches that shape what your customers can see and do in your mobile app and online store, grouped into Menu, Item Page, Cart & Checkout, Customer Account and Order Updates. They apply to your whole business, not to one location, and each change applies to both your app and your store at once. Everything starts on, so turning a switch off is how you remove a feature.
Apple Pay and Google Pay are on the Payment Methods page. See Set up payment methods.
Before you begin
- General Settings is available on all plans.
- Access is gated by the General Settings permission. Account owners have it by default and can grant it to employees. If you don't see Settings → General Settings, ask your account owner to grant you the permission.
Open General Settings
Open Settings → General Settings (https://app.gegsy.com/operations/general-settings). Adjust any toggle, then choose Save. If you scroll past the inline Save button while you have unsaved changes, a save bar appears at the bottom of the screen so you can save without scrolling back up.
Item Page
Control what customers can do when they open an item to add it to their order.
- Allow item notes — lets customers add a note or special instructions to an item (for example, "no onions" or "dressing on the side"). This is on by default. When off, the note field is hidden in both the storefront and the mobile app, and customers add items without notes.
Cart & Checkout
Choose what customers can add before they place an order.
Both are on by default.
- Show the coupon code field — lets customers type a coupon code in the cart. When off, the field is hidden. Coupons you share through links and banners still apply, so you can keep running coupon promotions without letting customers enter codes themselves.
- Allow an order note — lets customers add a note for your store on pickup and delivery orders, in your mobile app and online store. The note appears as Customer note: on the order's ticket in Square and in the order's details in Gegsy. When off, the field is hidden and order notes aren't accepted.
Delivery orders also have Delivery instructions for the driver, such as a gate code or where to leave the order. They aren't affected by this setting. They appear as Delivery instructions: on the ticket, so your own drivers see them, and they're passed to your Managed Delivery partner's courier.
Customers can't add an order note to shipping orders. Group orders don't have an order note or delivery instructions.
Customer Account
Choose what customers can do in the My Account section of the storefront and mobile app.
- Show "Contact Us" — turns the Contact Us entry in the customer's My Account menu on or off. When off, the Contact Us entry is hidden from the customer's My Account menu in both surfaces. Turn it on to give customers a way to reach you from their account; turn it off if you prefer to keep that entry hidden.
- Allow reorder — shows Reorder on past orders, so customers can add the same items to a new cart. On by default. When off, the button is hidden.
- Ask for birthday — shows the birthday field in Personal info. Birthdays are used for birthday rewards and messages. On by default. When off, the field is hidden; birthdays customers already saved are kept.
- Ask customers to rate your app — after a customer's first order, your mobile app may ask them to rate it in the App Store or Google Play, no more than once in a while. On by default. When off, it never asks. This only affects your mobile app.
Order Updates
Choose which buttons customers see on their open orders in the storefront and mobile app.
These buttons let customers update their own orders from the order page and their order cards. All three are on by default. Each toggle affects both the storefront and the mobile app.
- Show "I'm here" — for curbside pickup orders. Customers tap it when they get to the store, and their arrival shows on your Square POS and in Live Orders. When off, customers aren't offered the button; if Confirm pickup is on, curbside customers see that instead.
- Show "Confirm pickup" — for pickup orders. Customers confirm they've picked up their order, which completes it in Square. When off, you complete pickup orders yourself as usual.
- Show "Confirm delivery" — for orders you deliver yourself. Customers confirm their order arrived, which completes it in Square. Orders delivered by your Managed Delivery partner complete on their own, so this button never shows for them.
- Show open orders — shows a customer's open orders on the home screen of your mobile app and at the top of your online store menu. When off, customers find their orders in My Orders.
Turning a button off also stops it from working in older versions of your app that customers haven't updated yet.
Customer Emails
Choose which emails customers get about their orders.
Both are on by default. Customers can also turn emails off in their own notification settings.
- Order confirmation — sent when a customer places an order.
- Order shipped — sent when a shipping order gets a tracking number.
When you turn off both emails and email marketing isn't available on your account, customers no longer see an email setting in their notification preferences. Likewise, the text message setting only shows when text messages are available for your business.
After changing a toggle, choose Save to apply it.
