Create coupons

Create discount coupons for your storefront and branded app — set the code, discount, conditions, dates, and active status, with optional Square sync.

Who is this article for?

  • Gegsy merchants who want to offer discount codes on their storefront and branded mobile app.
  • Anyone with the Coupons permission for the account.

About coupons

Coupons are discount codes your customers redeem at checkout on your Gegsy storefront and branded mobile app. You set the code, the discount, and the conditions that control when and how it applies. You can optionally enable Square sync so the same code also redeems at Square POS and on Square Online. Coupons are available on all plans.

Before you begin

  • You need the Coupons permission to open Marketing → Coupons. Account owners have it by default and can grant it to employees.
  • Square sync is optional. To make a coupon redeemable at Square POS and on Square Online, your Square connection must include the required discount-code permissions. If they're missing, the editor shows Reconnect Square to enable in-store and Square Online redemption with a link to Go to Sync with Square.

Open the coupons list

Open Marketing → Coupons (https://app.gegsy.com/marketing/coupons). The list has two tabs:

  • Active — your live and upcoming coupons.
  • Archived — coupons you've archived, where you can Restore them.

Each row shows the Coupon code, its Criteria, Date Availability, how many times it's been Used, a Status toggle, and row Actions. A coupon synced to Square shows a Square badge. To start a new coupon, select Add a coupon.

Create a coupon

  1. On the Active tab, select Add a coupon. This opens the Create a coupon editor with a Live preview on the right that updates as you fill in the form.
  2. Work through the four sections below, then select Save changes.

Details

This section holds the Square sync option and the coupon code.

  • Also redeem in Square (POS and Square Online) — turn this on to let the code redeem at Square POS and on Square Online in addition to your Gegsy storefront and branded app. When it's off, the helper text reads "This coupon will redeem only on your Gegsy storefront and branded mobile app. Turn this on to also accept it at Square POS and Square Online." When on, it reads "Customers can redeem this code on your Gegsy storefront, your branded mobile app, at Square POS, and on Square Online." Turning Square sync on forces day-of-week to Every day of the week and limits item/category coupons to a single application, because Square's API doesn't support those options.
  • Coupon Code — the code the customer enters at checkout (for example, the placeholder is 10off). As you type, Gegsy checks availability and shows Code is available. or a message if it's already used by another coupon or on your Square account. Note: Coupon codes can't be changed after creation. To use a different code, archive this coupon and create a new one.

Coupon details

Set the discount and what it applies to.

  • Coupon Type — choose % Discount (a percentage off) or a currency-amount discount (shown with your account's currency symbol). You set the percentage or amount yourself.
  • Discount Amount — the value of the discount, in percent or your currency depending on the type. A percent discount can't be more than 100%.
  • Max Discount Value (Optional) — for a percent discount only, Cap the discount amount this coupon can apply. Leave it blank for no cap.
  • Applies To — choose where the discount applies:
  • Entire Sale — the whole order.
  • Category — select one or more categories under Select Categories.
  • Specific Items — select one or more items under Select Items.
  • Application mode — when you scope to a category or specific items (and Square sync is off), choose how the discount applies. For items, either "Apply to the highest-value item in cart across all selected items" or "Apply discount every time one of the selected items is added to cart." For categories, either "Apply to highest-value item in cart across all selected categories" or "Apply to all eligible items in cart across all selected categories."

Categories and items come from your Square catalog. See Manage your menu categories and Manage your menu items.

Total number of coupons available

Control how many total redemptions the coupon allows, and whether to cap per-customer use.

  • Unlimited / Limited — choose whether redemptions are capped. Unlimited shows "An unlimited number of customers can use this coupon code." Choosing Limited reveals Set the number of times this coupon can be redeemed.
  • Limit coupon per customer — turn this on to cap how many times a single customer can use the code, then enter the number (per customer).

Active dates

Set when the coupon is valid and whether it's active.

  • Start Date (Optional) and Expiration Date (Optional) — schedule when the coupon becomes redeemable and when it stops. Leave blank if the coupon never expires. Use Clear to remove a date. If you set one date you must set the other, and the expiration date must be in the future and later than the start date.
  • Valid Days — leave Every day of the week on, or turn it off to pick specific days (Sun through Sat). Day-of-week restrictions aren't available when Square sync is on.
  • Active — controls whether the coupon can be redeemed right now. Inactive coupons stay in your list but can't be redeemed.

Live preview

As you edit, the Live preview panel shows how the coupon will read: "Here's how this coupon will read on the merchant dashboard and how it'll apply at checkout." It reflects the code, discount (and any max cap), what it applies to, dates, total and per-customer usage, selected days, and whether Square sync is on. The status badge shows Live, Scheduled, Expired, or Inactive based on your settings.

Turn a coupon on or off

On the Active tab, use the Status switch on any row to activate or deactivate a coupon without editing it. An inactive coupon stays in your list but can't be redeemed.

Edit a coupon

On the Active tab, select the pencil (Edit) action on a row. You can change everything except the code, which is locked after creation.

Archive and restore a coupon

To remove a coupon, select the Archive action on its row (or Archive in the editor) and confirm. Archiving asks: "This will archive 1 coupon and expire its Square code if it has one. You can restore it later from the Archived tab." To bring a coupon back, open the Archived tab and select Restore.
