Set up marketing automations
Send welcome, win-back, review request, birthday, and abandoned cart in-app notifications automatically from Marketing → Automations.
Who is this article for?
- Gegsy merchants who want to reach customers automatically — welcoming new customers, bringing back regulars, asking for reviews, and more — without sending each message by hand.
About automations
Automations are set-and-forget campaigns. Each one sends an in-app notification to a customer's phone when something happens — they sign up, they haven't ordered in a while, it's their birthday — and can include a reward, like a discount coupon. You write the message and choose the reward once; nothing sends until you turn the automation on.
Open Marketing → Automations (https://app.gegsy.com/marketing/automations) to see your automations.
Before you begin
- Available on the Pro and Premium plans. See Gegsy pricing to compare plans.
- Access is controlled by the Campaigns permission.
- Automations reach customers who have your branded mobile app, allow notifications, and haven't turned off marketing messages.
- If you see Automations are coming soon, automations aren't available on your account yet.
The automations
| Automation | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Welcome | Greets a new customer right after they sign up and highlights your first-order perk. |
| Win-back | Reaches customers who haven't ordered in a while with a comeback offer. |
| Review request | Thanks customers 24 hours after their first order and asks for a review. |
| Birthday | Sends customers a special offer on their birthday. |
| Abandoned cart | Reminds customers about items they left in their cart. |
Each row on the Automations page shows the automation's status — Active, Off, or Draft — its channel, and how many customers it has reached (Sent) and how many ordered afterward (Ordered after). Select a row to open it.
Write the message
- Open an automation.
- Under In-app notification, enter a Notification title and a Notification message. This is what appears on the customer's lock screen.
- To start from our suggested wording, select Use recommended copy. This replaces the message text in the automation.
Personalize the message with these placeholders — we fill them in for each customer:
{firstName}— the customer's first name{businessName}— your business name{couponCode}— the reward code (coupon rewards only){itemList}and{itemCount}— the items left in the cart, and how many (abandoned cart only)
The Preview on the right shows how the notification will look as you type.
Choose where a tap takes customers
Under Add content, pick a Destination for when the customer taps the notification: Item, Category, Coupon, App page, or Web link. When you pick a destination, you can also set a Button label, such as Order now.
With No button, the tap goes to the natural place for each automation:
- Abandoned cart opens the customer's cart, with the items they left in it. If they've closed the app since, they confirm their location and pickup or delivery time, and we put the items back — any that are no longer available are listed.
- Win-back and Birthday with a coupon save the coupon so it applies at checkout.
- Review request opens your Google review link.
- Welcome starts an order.
A coupon reward is always saved for checkout, wherever the tap goes.
Add a reward
Under Reward, choose what the customer gets. The Review request automation doesn't include a reward.
- No reward (message only)
- Free item on first order (Welcome and Birthday) — uses the free first-order item from your Loyalty settings. It must be turned on there, or the automation won't send.
- Discount coupon — pick an existing coupon, or select Create a new reward coupon to make one just for this automation.
Coupon rewards are Restrict to recipients: only customers who receive the code can redeem it. When you create a new reward coupon, you can turn on Renew automatically every year to get a fresh code each year — handy for Birthday. Each automation shows a recommended discount limit; if your reward is above it, you'll be asked to confirm before it goes live.
Adjust the settings
Some automations have extra settings:
- Win-back — Days since last order sets how long a customer must go without ordering before they receive it.
- Review request — add your Google review link. A tap on the notification opens it.
Send a test
Before you turn an automation on, select Send a test to send it to one customer's phone. Search for the customer by name or phone, confirm they've agreed to receive in-app notifications from you, and select Send test.
Turn it on
- Select Turn on. If anything is missing, the automation lists what to fix under Before you can turn this on:.
- To keep working on it later, select Save draft instead.
Once an automation is Active, edit it and select Save changes to update it, or select Turn off to stop it.
See who got your messages
Open an automation and select the Activity tab. Across the top you'll see how many messages were Sent, how many customers Ordered after receiving one, the Conversion rate, and how many messages are Scheduled.
Below that, three lists show every customer the automation has reached:
- Sent — who received the message and when, the reward it included, and whether they ordered afterward. Select View order to open that order.
- Scheduled — messages waiting to go out, like a review request that sends a day after a customer's first order, or a message held until quiet hours end.
- Not sent — customers the automation skipped, with the reason. For example, the customer opted out of marketing, already received another message in the last 48 hours, or doesn't have your app with notifications turned on.
Select a customer's name to open their profile. Dates and times are in your store's timezone.
Quiet hours
Under Quiet hours on the Automations page, turn on Pause messages during quiet hours and set Quiet from and Quiet until. Messages held during quiet hours send when the window reopens. Times are in your store's timezone.
To avoid overwhelming customers, a customer receives at most one automated message every 48 hours, across all your automations.
