Set up modifiers and variation defaults

• Gegsy merchants who want to review their modifier lists and pre-select default modifier options based on item variations.

About modifiers

Modifiers are the add-ons and choices customers make on an item — like "Add Protein" or "Bun Choice." Your modifier lists sync from Square, so you create them and set their rules — optional or required, minimum and maximum selections, and prices — in Square. On the Gegsy Modifiers page, you review those lists and configure variation defaults.

Review your modifier lists

Open Menu → Modifiers. Each modifier list shows:

• Name — the modifier list's name.
• Options — how many options it includes.
• Selection — whether it's Optional or Required, the selection control (for example, Checkboxes), and the minimum/maximum selections.
• Used by — how many items use the modifier list.
• Variation defaults — whether per-variation defaults are set (for example, "2 configured" or "Not configured").

Select Sync with Square to pull in your latest modifiers and changes from Square.

To narrow the list, use the bar above the table:

• Search modifiers or options — find a modifier list by its name or by one of its options (for example, "Cheddar").
• Selection — show only Required or Optional lists.
• Used by — show lists used by items, lists that only appear nested inside another list, or lists that aren't used anywhere.
• Defaults — show lists with variation defaults configured, or not configured.

Select Reset to clear the search and filters.

Nested modifiers

A nested modifier opens more choices when a customer picks it — for example, choosing Add a flavor opens a Flavor list so the customer can pick which one. You set up nested modifier sets in Square, and Gegsy picks them up when your menu syncs. Square allows up to three levels.

In your mobile app and on your online ordering site:

• The nested choices appear indented under the option that opens them, only after the customer selects that option.
• A required nested list only applies once its option is selected. Customers can't add the item until they answer it.
• Prices for nested options add to the item total, like any other modifier.

On the Modifiers page, a nested list shows Nested under and the list and option that open it, and a list whose options open more choices shows how many do. A list that's only used as a nested choice shows Nested only under Used by. Select Configure on a list to see its Nested modifiers section, with links to the lists it's nested under and an Opens column next to each option.

On your orders, nested choices show under the option they belong to — in order details, Live Orders, receipts, and order confirmation emails — and they print the same way on your Square tickets.

Modifier images

If you add an image to a modifier option in Square, it shows as a small picture next to that option when customers customize an item in your app and on your storefront. Lists without images look the same as before. In a list where only some options have images, the others get a blank space so the names stay lined up.

Images come from Square — add, change, or remove them there, and they update in Gegsy after the next sync. When you select Configure on a list, you'll see each option's image next to its name.

Discount modifiers with a promotion

To discount modifiers automatically, for example "2 free add-ons on Tuesdays," create a promotion. Select Configure on a list, then select Create promotion. The new promotion starts with that list already selected. The button only appears on lists that have a priced modifier. Promotions are available on the Pro and Premium plans. See Create promotions.

Configure variation defaults

Variation defaults let you pre-select a modifier option when a customer picks a matching variation on any item that uses the modifier list — for example, defaulting a drink's pumps to match the size. Customers can still change the selection at checkout.

1. On the Modifiers page, select Configure next to the modifier list.
2. Review How this appears on Gegsy — the Selection control, Requirement, and Minimum/Maximum selections. These come from your Square setup, and individual items can override them in Square. A list is Required only when its minimum is at least one; a list with a minimum of zero shows as Optional and renders as checkboxes so customers can clear their choice. Below that, you'll see the modifier's options and their prices.
3. In Variation Defaults, select + Add from sample item to pull in the variations from an item that uses this modifier list.
4. For each Variation name, choose a Default modifier from the dropdown. The Sampled from column shows which item the variation came from.
5. Select Save.

To remove a variation default, select the delete (trash) icon on its row. Select Back to modifiers to return to the list.
